ICT Philosophy

We've been hammering out our ICT philosophy statement. This is what we have so far.

ICT Philosophy
Integration of the ICT curriculum into the other subject areas involves planning, teaching, and assessment supported by ICT specialists. Such an approach both enriches the subject area courses through the design cycle's inquiry model and provides a more meaningful context for ICT education through the core curriculum's focus on PYP transdisciplinary themes and MYP Areas of Interaction.

Goals
  • Interdisciplinary teaching - Within 5 years, ICT skills will be fully integrated with subject areas.
  • Assessment - ICT specialists will keep track of ICT assessments (design cycle, ICT standards and indicators) for each grade level. PYP: ICT specialists will document assessment methods in subject area Atlas Rubicon Units. MYP: ICT specialists will document assessment methods in ICT units in Atlas Rubicon.
  • Alignment – ICT specialists working with classroom teachers will ensure ICT standards and indicators are aligned in core subject teaching units in Atlas Rubicon. PYP: The ICT standards and indicators will be included in subject area teaching units in Atlas Rubicon. MYP: The ICT standards and indicators will be documented in ICT teaching units in Atlas Rubicon. MYP ICT specialists working with classroom teachers will document 50 hours of MYP technology instruction per year. ICT literacy integrated with Health will continue to enforce ICT skills and the design cycle in grade 9.
  • Concept/skills acquisition - ICT specialists will support teachers to ensure they have needed ICT conceptual understandings and skills.
  • Subject area content - ICT specialists will support teachers to develop and implement appropriate lessons using 21st century literacy skills.
  • Design cycle - ICT specialists will support teachers’ understanding and implementation of the design cycle.
  • Portfolios - ICT specialists will support documentation of evidence of ICT achievement, including the design cycle, in student portfolios.
  • Higher level technology skills - Publication and Theater Tech integrate higher level ICT skills and content, will continue to be supported, but since they reach a smaller number of students and they will not be used to document the 50 hours needed for MYP students.
ICT Subject “To Do List” for 2009-2010 to support 21st century learning
  1. Develop a BBP-12 ICT curriculum philosophy. (see above)
  2. Develop a system for the ICT teachers (library/tech) to meet with classroom teachers on a regular basis to support classroom teachers. (PYP and MYP)
  3. Provide increased PD for teachers with a focus on 21st century literacy skills and an emphasis on research skills. (NoodleTools and Databases, etc). Help teachers to understand the importance of “digital footprint”. Possibilities: "digital cafe" or "multi-week course" Establish team of tech savvy students to help teachers.
  4. Develop and implement an ES/MS/HS research strategy with curriculum coordinators.
  5. Continue to develop the learning platform including the new finalsite-based website and Moodle to facilitate learning.
  6. Use ICT to support instructional differentiation/modification/adaptation.

Once again, I am so impressed with the thoughtful planning that goes into every new initiative at CA. I love that you're designing your integration program with the end in mind and developing your philosophy and beliefs before you start. CA is definitely setting things up for success!

Hi Rhonda,

This is great. I will be looking at and thinking about this a lot when I am planning out my classes and curriculum next year. Thanks for this post.

Thank you so much for your openness with this. I will pass on to my principal for him to take a look. I think both our schools have a very similar vision for IT.
Thanks again.
